In the Heights soundtrack album does just okay on the charts

The In the Heights soundtrack album does just okay on the charts this week. Looking at pure sales, it comes in around #9. But the music market overall is dominated by streaming, not sales. To get to #9 on the sales chart, it only had to sell about 8400 copies. On the overall chart, which combines sales and streaming, it comes in at #45.

It is common for musical soundtracks to outperform in sales vs streaming. Sales are driven by people who want to pay for the entire album. Many consumers want to buy an entire soundtrack album, while many contemporary artists are more singles-oriented and don't sell a lot of complete albums.

Interestingly, the Broadway cast recording of Hamilton is still hanging in there, at #39 in its 299th week on the overall chart. Originally, it was an outperformer in sales, but now it's mostly streaming-driven, with streaming numbers similar to its neighbors on the chart.
