I was! And twice more during the run. She was sheer electricity. And the audience response was really something. Parts of the album are available on YouTube. But I’ve never seen it streaming on Spotify. The sound isn’t great on the recording. I understand Ms. Minnelli was very disappointed, too. But Liza at the top of her game? She overcomes the less-than-stellar sound.

What always upsets me is why, shortly after this, she turned down the Weissler “Gypsy” that went to Tyne Daly. Tyne acknowledges that the Weisslers offered it to Liza first. Tyne was great, of course. But can you IMAGINE Liza’s Rose? The Carnegie Hall gig went on for weeks and she tore the roof off the place. Her Rose would have been the stuff of LEGEND. So it frustrates me that she didn’t do it.

Yes yes she had her reasons. No doubt her recovery at the time was one of them. But, Jesus, it would have been one of the greatest musical comedy performances of our time.
