| My original post on this topic didn't seem to fly (I'm just waking up), so apologies if this is a do-over. I also saw Liza M at the Five Oaks during the Radio City run, with Shirley MacLaine and Bella Abzug. She was wearing a red hoodie and looked about 14 years old. I almost met her until an unruly fan ruined the occasion and I slunk back in my seat at the bar. She is very accommodating to her fans, even loudmouths, and she had flawless porcelain skin. She is also not a tall woman, which surprised me after having seen the Radio City show and the way she commanded that huge barn all on her own during the first act. The second act was much glitzier and showcased her dancing skills. I saw Radio City three times, opening night (Gregory Peck in the men's room!), closing night (kd lang in the front row and she was introduced), and upon its return engagement in January 1992 where I had fourth row seats and discovered this show was better experienced from the mezzanine even though it was great to see her so up close and personal. All three perfs I atended were spectacular and sold out. In fact, I believe she sold out the original three-week run. This engagement made it to DVD and PBS and won Kander & Ebb an Emmy for the original song "Sorry I Asked." Did not know the CH clip had been shared here before, but I'm not surprised to hear that. I still marvel at the tepid response of the assembled journalists, but a good portion of them were probably there to see her stumble around drunk. |
