I thought that Andre De Shields stole the show with his "I'm Still Here" (even with that odd sometimes disco-y arrangement) - and not just his ever-strong voice and delivery, but the fun with the playbills and pics as well. (I laughed out loud when he sang "I've run the gamut A to Z," holding up the LP covers to Ain't Misbehavin' and The Wiz.)
Otherwise, I share the general feeling that it was rather underwhelming - even as I know that their hearts were in the right place. I'll go as far as to say that many times it began to feel like an overlong infomercial or even a PBS pledge break. And to that end, I do think it was way too long - an hour of this format would have been much more welcome than all of its 1:50 run time.
It was great that they did it at all. But no, it wasn't quite what I expected it to be. |
