Ragtime had its first full production in Toronto. This was before Los Angeles. The Toronto cast included Stokes Mitchell, Marin Mazzie, Peter Friedman, Audra McDonald, Mark Jacoby, Jim Corti, Lynnette Perry and Steven Sutcliffe, all of whom were in the opening Broadway cast, and Camille Saviola as Emma Goldman. Saviola had played Goldman in the first reading in Toronto. Tovah Feldshuh played the role in the second reading there. Following those readings was a workshop in which Judy Kaye played Goldman.
Stokes Mitchell left the Toronto production to open the L.A. production. It was always planned that he would then go to Broadway. John Rubinstein, LaChanze and John Dossett from L.A. replaced Peter Friedman, Audra McDonald and Scott Jacoby when they left the Broadway production (although all three of them left before the Broadway production closed). |
