MANDELA

Written by Yolanda Brooks & John Ruiz Miranda

Directed by John Ruiz Miranda

(New York, NY) - East Harlem Repertory Theatre in association with Yolanda Brooks Productions, today announced that the music, laughter and dance filled play MANDELA, co-written by Yolanda Brooks (a local N.Y.C. civil servant) and John Ruiz Miranda (a retired 9/11 N.Y.C. fireman) will soon begin an open-ended, Off Broadway run at Actors Temple Theatre, 339 West 47th St. The production will begin previews on Saturday, July 10th and have its official opening on Saturday, July 17th (the eve of Nelson Mandela's birthday). Performances are on Saturdays and Sundays at 4:30PM. Mr. Ruiz directs. Tickets start at $32.

MANDELA unveils the gripping untold story of Nelson Mandela in a world forever changed by apartheid. Confrontational and uncompromising in their pursuit for freedom of oppression in South Africa, Mandela, Winnie and The ANC fearlessly battle enormous odds, while maintaining their dignity and compassion. The many layers of the show portray how the U.S and South Africa mirrored each other, as protesting Blacks in each country suffered similar social injustices while fighting against oppression - and how the CIA played a mysterious role in Mr. Mandela's capture. The show depicts highly sensitive subjects, but also evokes laughter and moments of joy. In 2021, MANDELA is a timely, relevant, moving experience for all.

Audience members are asked to do time with Mandela. As you arrive at the theater, you will be processed for detainment. You will be led through prison gates, handed handcuffs, and asked to put them on (or simply keep them as a souvenir). A performance for the socially cautious, the MANDELA delivers a powerful and timely message in a racially and socially inclusive manner. The cast are native African, African American, White, and Latino. The show brings the various faces of the world back onto the New York stage.

The cast of MANDELA features Robert Greene, Nadijah Abdul Khaliq, Ivan Goris, James R Garrett, Lamine Thiam, Thaddeus Birkett, Tyler McCall, Jaray Hunter, John Shortt, Keith L.T. Wright, Arlene "LaLa" McGriff.

The production features lighting design by Maarten Cornelis, and sound & visual design by Patricio Pereira. The Stage Manager is Aurora Winger and the House Manager is Melanie Ruiz.

Yolanda Brooks is a New York City civil servant. Born and raised in Manhattan, her love for the arts blossomed during her youth when she pursued on stage dancing and music. However, it was her gift for writing that propelled her playwriting and production career in 2010. Her plays have entertained over 100,000 school aged children and adults. Some of her works include "Mandela", "The Motown Story" and "Tribute to African American Inventors".

John Ruiz Miranda is an award-winning writer, producer, director, politician and philanthropist. A retired 9/11 NYC firefighter, John has been a producer of children's theatre since 1983. Recently dubbed "The new Mr. Rogers" by Access Hollywood, John's productions have been attended by over 1 million school children.
