"One thing I found surprising is that the NY Times review says in the first sentence that the student is the "heroine" of the play and implies later that the professor is the "villain." But I think the script and the production are trying to be balanced, and I don't think the playwright or the director would call either of them a "heroine" or a "villain." I'm curious what others thought."
One thing I liked about this play is how that was open to interpretation. A group of us saw this play several years ago at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival at Shepherd University, and we had a spirited discussion afterward since some sided with the student and some with the teacher.
Thinking back on the play, I see how it could already seem "dated" since we saw it before the Black Lives Matter movement. |
