I found the play riveting. I'd originally thought I'd stop viewing it as I found the professor intolerably smug and condescending in the beginning. I'm glad I stayed with it, most especially for Ms. Banes' pitch perfect performance.

I too am surprised that the Times critic used "villain" and "heroine." Was it possibly--haven't seen the review--in a negative critique of the play, in that possibly the reviewer thought the characters to be stereotypes?

I know what you mean about "people I would never want to hang around with in real life" but, although I would NOT want to be with either of these two for a long time in real life, I never felt that watching the streaming. Lord knows I've felt it many times with other plays.
