In Merman's second autobiography, the one with the "missing" chapter on her marriage to Ernest Borgnine, Merman states that there was some European director who was a big deal at the time who was so impressed with her that he wanted her to do a production of MOTHER COURAGE. Nothing ever came of that, of course, but it would have been fascinating. But, of course, this story comes from Merman herself, so I guess it should be taken with a grain of salt.
