It was Brecht himself who thought that Merman was the best choice among American actresses to play Mother Courage. He had seen her in Annie Get Your Gun and was a fan.
In fact, in the Berliner Ensemble production Brecht had Weigel imitate the same slack jawed take that Merman did the first time she sees Frank Butler when Courage sees the Cook.
Of course some might say that Merman did play Mother Courage in Gypsy. A mother who aggressively pursues money and security in a field where she cannot win, destroying her children in the process....the characters are similar. |
