It will be interesting to see how much they balance cutting special effects vs cutting story. I saw the 90 minute version of Phantom in Las Vegas, and it felt like a highlights reel of the show, with the major songs and scenes/effects back-to-back-to-back. Since there were so few "small moments," the pacing and overall shape of the show were strange. It felt like the whole thing was pitched just a bit too much, all the time.
I guess part of it depends also on how much they end up cutting. I think there are enough characters that they could do two performances of 3-and-a-half hours each on the same day without it being too much for the actors. August: Osage County did 2 performances of 3-hours-and-20-minutes on the same day. Given the technical demands with Harry Potter, though, two shows of that length may be challenging for those backstage. |
