The characters can be honest about the stories they tell and still withhold information that would have been too sensitive culturally in the 1970s. Likewise, they could be honest in the stories they tell but also not be entirely honest with themselves about their sexuality and gender identities, especially as those were understood 45 years ago.
It's not a zero sum game. |
