While her tweet was abhorrent, I actually won’t be going if they fire her. I’m so over the whole idea of ‘cancel culture’ – just let the productions proceed, and then let the audience or customers make up their minds own way or another on a case-by-case basis.
At this rate I’m going to be saving so much money on theater tickets, maybe almost as much as I did over the last year and a half. I didn’t renew Encores (because their season sounds like it sucks, at least to me), won’t be seeing MJ (I don’t want a penny of my money going to his estate, even though I fully support the production’s right to exist), won’t be seeing The Minutes (my main interest was Armie Hammer, and frankly I think it’s ridiculous that he appears to have been ‘canceled’ largely over private text messages that merely reference a bizarre fetish – and one that he clearly didn’t indulge in, as he’s not Hannibal Lecter), and I won’t be resubscribing to MTC either if they fire Rashad over a clearly misguided tweet, in which she made the mistake of publicly defending a lifelong friend and colleague.
I’ve also already seen most of the shows coming back this fall, so right now – after years of seeing 30 or 40 shows a year – I have tickets for two shows between now and next June. Based on current announcements and developments I think there’s a chance that might expand to 4 or 5, but at this rate I’ll be surprised if it’s any more than that. |
