In the civil suit brought by Andrea Constand it was revealed that the prosecutor gave Cosby immunity, and he confessed to having casual sexual relations with her involving the illegal use of quaaludes. The prosecutor in addition told Cosby that he then could not be prosecuted criminally for that crime. Cosby was required to pay Constand a $3.38 million settlement.

However, a different prosecutor some time later charged Cosby with the felony of aggravated indecent assault using his deposition (from the civil trial) as evidence. Cosby was convicted in 2018 of this crime and sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison. Yesterday the Pennsylvania Supreme Court declared the criminal trial illegal and ordered Cosby's immediate release.

The charges of which he was convicted in the criminal trial have been vacated. Nevertheless, the crimes to which he confessed in the civil trial remain -- he can not be exonerated of those crimes.
