| The Color Purple isn't nearly as well written. Falsettos was timely and has its moments, but ultimately what it did at its moment in history strikes me as more significant than the show itself. Hedwig is a blast with real moments of emotional impact, but its libretto sort of falls apart in its third act. Fun Home is important in terms of representation, but, again, isn't as strongly written as Cabaret and KOTSW. Kinky Boots is a lot of fun and I expect "Not My Father's Son" and, to a lesser extent, "Hold Me in Your Heart" to hold great meaning for a lot of gay men for years to come, but, as Feldman even said, is cobbled together from a lot of other shows. |
