"Hedwig" was revolutionary in at least two ways: it brought real Queer culture to the musical theater, rather than the heteronormative, upper middle class version normally portrayed; and it brought true rock and roll to the musical theater in a way that became a template for all of the rock musicals that followed. It should be at the top of this list.
I'd also say it's an extraordinary piece of writing that pushes the form of musical storytelling, but that's more subjective. |
