Thank you for the last comment. I try my best to be accurate and when I am not I correct myself. What I wrote above was my recollection. I am linking below a contemporaneous article from the Times. Based on it (and I have not researched this any deeper), Oak was clearly under contract at the time he was told he would be stepping aside for Mandy in the same way that Brittain Ashford had for Ingrid Michaelson. My impression is that he had already performed the role but that is not really germane since if we was contracted he had a right to the role and could not be told to relinquish even a single performance. (This comes up sometimes with an understudy or standby who never went on and would like to before they depart the production. In these cases it is ordinarily [perhaps obligatorily, I can't recall offhand] the understudy who asks. The relinquishment rule is a bedrock of the contract.) Moreover, the article says nothing about Oak's preparedness and everything about the dire financial situation. (At the time I railed repeatedly about the abject incompetence of the producer, but that's another song.) I do think "fired" is not the right word technically and I should have found another one. At the same time, clearly, the producer breached the contract and left the actor in the position of either acquiescing or leaving.

If you have any other info that sheds light on this, I hope you will post it. I definitely have no interest in sponsoring anything that is incorrect. Let me just reiterate that the original question was when was the last time an actor had been replaced (I hope that is better than fired :-) for ticket-selling reasons and I think Comet is indeed the last (high profile at least) example.
