I can't answer your questions, but apropros the criticism of the songs: I would suggest that often (not always) criticism of a score is political, in the broadest sense, rather than aesthetically informed. The critic normally reviews reputation, not actual music and lyrics. The lyrics, as we know, of 1776, manage to unify historical detail with entertaining emotional content (think of the marvel that is "But Mr Adams"). The songs, by different turns, progress the story or celebrate pertinent feelings; and illuminate character - in short, all that we hope musical songs will do. I can think of only one "half-rhyme" in the whole score - and it actually isn't a half rhyme but a forced one "Do you still smell of vanilla / ...and is my favourite lover's pilla (instead of pillow)..." in "Yours, Yours, Yours". Compared to the modern standard which has been obliterated by the acceptance of bottom-of-the-barrel pop music standards of lyrical construction instead of traditional Broadway literate ambitiousness, 1776's score is "Hyperion to a satyr".

Criticism of musical scores by reviewers is a mug's game. According to first-time-out reviewers, Sondheim can't write a memorable tune, amongst many other ludicrous claims that have been made about Broadway songwriters over many decades - claims which close inspection of the scores, and growing reputations of the song writers, normally expel as wilful deafness. As a general rule, critics don't know how to review anything that is really new. A simple glance at old reviews of what are now considered models of craft demonstrate this.
