1. I think it is preposterous to suggest that criticism is "often" political in any sense. Are there examples? Sure. Is it common? No.
2. The suggestion that "the modern standard ... has been obliterated" makes no sense. The modern standard is the modern standard. What you probably mean is that you wish lyrics were still written in a "traditional" style that resonated for audiences when you became familiar with musical theatre rather than in the style that resonates today. To say that Broadway lyric construction today mimics "bottom-of-the-barrel pop music standards" betrays a lack of awareness of the latter. Give an example.
3. Re "a mug's game," it appears you don't understand the meaning of the expression.
4. While it is of course true that critics occasionally do not fully appreciate the work of new voices, it is demonstrably untrue that this is endemic or that "critics don't know how to review anything that is really new."

TBH I am not sure what prompted your catalog of bêtes noires because it really doesn't seem prompted by Wayman's post.
