| You're welcome, broadwaybacker. ... Last night's broadcast of ''Yankee Doodle Dandy'' prompted me to look up its entry at Wikipedia. It was kinda surprising to learn that George M. Cohan was an advisor on the movie, and actually wanted Fred Astaire to play him, but Astaire turned it down. Cohan, however, did get to see the movie before he died, and approved of James Cagney's performance (which would win Cagney his Oscar). ''Yankee Doodle Dandy'' includes an excerpt from Cohan's first full-length musical, ''Little Johnny Jones'' (1904). It ran for 52 performances and introduced Cohan's classic ''Give My Regards to Broadway.'' But I'm curious about the song that followed it in the original show: ''The March of the Frisco Chinks.'' Was it an instrumental? Did it have lyrics? Has anyone heard it? This number was cut from the show when ''Little Johnny Jones'' was revived in 1982 on Broadway. The revival starred Donny Osmond and ran for 29 previews and closed on opening night. Anyone here see it? |
