Thanks, rossde. I might have to track down a copy of that ''directors cut'' DVD someday. Many years ago, I recall seeing a paperback of ''1776,'' which included a large section detailing the historical and dramatic liberties taken in the show. It's such a brilliant book. From what I've read, Sherman penned the original libretto, and Stone came in and rewrote it. I wonder why Edwards didn't get any co-credit for the book.

Also, I noticed that ''1776'' opened in 1969 after only 5 previews. Is that unusual? And how was ''1776'' received when it first played London?
