There are more breakthrough cases right now (someone just got pulled from the Big Brother season on CBS despite being vaccinated). I'm sure this person was tested more than once.

It’s going to happen—no vaccine is 100% effective.

Moderna and pfizer are 95% effective—so there is that 5% breakthrough. And the June stats was .8% death rate for vaccinated—so of the 10,000 that died in june in US—around 80 were vaccinated (I can’t find a breakdown of j&j vs M/P or if both shots taken or underlying health issue—so that 80 deaths might be much smaller for certain group of vaccinated). But big brother didn’t shut down—it just pulled the positive person. I’m surprised London shut down production instead of pulling that person out for a week and seeing if it actually spread to others. I’d hate to see broadway shut down if one person in cast or crew tested positive. If so, don’t even start up. The US is doing really well but most of the rest of world is in bad shape and won’t improve in the next year. There’s 8 billion people in the world, I doubt there will be 1 billion vaccinated by December. And we might be looking for booster shots when most of the world is unvaccinated. People will be testing positive for years in all sectors of the country.

At the moment the UK rules (which are probably going to change in the next couple of weeks) are that if you have come into close contact with someone who tests positive then you have to isolate for ten days. Close contact is defined as: face-to-face contact including being coughed on or having a face-to-face conversation within one metre; been within one metre for one minute or longer without face-to-face contact; been within 2 metres of someone for more than 15 minutes (either as a one-off contact, or added up together over one day). It's likely that the cast member who has tested positive will have been in close contact with quite a large number of the rest of that cast, so the producers had no alternative but to close down - even if the remainder of the cast tested negative. Also, although in the UK 64% of all adults are fully vaccinated and 86% have had one dose (one of the highest in the world), because the roll out has been largely based on age, I'd guess that quite a lot of the younger members of the cast have only received the first dose, so they are more vulnerable to the new delta strain than those who have been double dosed.

They had to close under them. Hopefully they will be modified because I assume most shows will have issues every few weeks.

England's rules only. The virus is presumed to act and spread differently in Scotland, Wales and NI, all of which have their own separate rules and guidance.

It's been confirmed today that from 16 August fully vaccinated people will no longer have to isolate after close contact with an infected person. These close contacts will still be advised to take a PCR test as soon as possible (though this isn't mandatory) and if they are positive they will have to isolate whether they've been vaccinated or not. I'm guessing the 16 August because by then a very high percentage of UK adults will have been fully vaccinated.

I'm sure that productions will want close contacts to take the tests and, therefore, there may be the odd cancelled performance while test results are processed. However it should mean that the 10 day block cancellations are no longer required (unless of course a critical mass of the cast/crew/team test positive)

".8% death rate for vaccinated" Is nowhere near correct. It's much, much smaller than that.

Before stating (incorrectly) that my number was wrong. I had checked before I posted—I don’t believe in alternative facts.

They’re saying that 99.2% of recent Covid deaths were among unvaccinated people. So that would mean .8% of those deaths were those who were vaccinated. That’s where Dramedy’s getting that number.

A few other considerations:

In general, deaths are a bad metric. First, it is a trailing stat. (Also note that Dramedy's data is for May and things have changed a lot since then, at least in the non-stupid jurisdictions.) Second, today, the number of people who die is thankfully very small, so when that tiny number is the denominator, percentages don't mean as much as they seem. Third, the data does a lousy job of controlling for co-morbidities.

Hospitalization is a better although also not perfect metric. Per the CDC, again for May and it is undoubtedly lower now, 99.9% of hospitalized patients are not vaccinated. Lower but still not very statistically meaningful. There were only 320 people in the hospital in New York State yesterday. Also, there is no tracking of diagnostic codes.

Finally, for the small number of breakthough cases, the overwhelming majority are asymptomatic. We will likely never eradicate Covid 19 but we won't think about it. Also, every wave will bring more converts to the vaccination bandwagon. Look at what governors are pleading with their constituents now.
