Five Broadway previews for a big musical in 1969 was within the normal range. In that same 1968-69 season, according to IBDb, Maggie Flynn gave six Broadway previews, Promises, Promises, seven, Zorba, 12, Canterbury Tales, five. Her First Roman isn't listed as having given any previews, but that may be an oversight. Dear World gave a then-astonishing total of 45 previews, but Dear World was in terrible trouble, needed a lot of work, and postponed its opening from late December to February. Generally speaking, though, several weeks of Broadway musical previews in New York before opening didn't happen during the Sixties and didn't become commonplace until much later.
