At the moment the UK rules (which are probably going to change in the next couple of weeks) are that if you have come into close contact with someone who tests positive then you have to isolate for ten days. Close contact is defined as: face-to-face contact including being coughed on or having a face-to-face conversation within one metre; been within one metre for one minute or longer without face-to-face contact; been within 2 metres of someone for more than 15 minutes (either as a one-off contact, or added up together over one day). It's likely that the cast member who has tested positive will have been in close contact with quite a large number of the rest of that cast, so the producers had no alternative but to close down - even if the remainder of the cast tested negative. Also, although in the UK 64% of all adults are fully vaccinated and 86% have had one dose (one of the highest in the world), because the roll out has been largely based on age, I'd guess that quite a lot of the younger members of the cast have only received the first dose, so they are more vulnerable to the new delta strain than those who have been double dosed.

They had to close under them. Hopefully they will be modified because I assume most shows will have issues every few weeks.

England's rules only. The virus is presumed to act and spread differently in Scotland, Wales and NI, all of which have their own separate rules and guidance.

It's been confirmed today that from 16 August fully vaccinated people will no longer have to isolate after close contact with an infected person. These close contacts will still be advised to take a PCR test as soon as possible (though this isn't mandatory) and if they are positive they will have to isolate whether they've been vaccinated or not. I'm guessing the 16 August because by then a very high percentage of UK adults will have been fully vaccinated.

I'm sure that productions will want close contacts to take the tests and, therefore, there may be the odd cancelled performance while test results are processed. However it should mean that the 10 day block cancellations are no longer required (unless of course a critical mass of the cast/crew/team test positive)
