Edwards was a successful songwriter, but had no experience as a playwright. Stone ended up writing the show's book. Edwards wrote all the songs and was given the additional credit Based on a conception of Sherman Edwards.

There was a pre-Broadway tryout in both New Haven and Washington. The show underwent various changes and some songs were dropped.

The London production was not produced by Stuart Ostrow. It had a short run.
