Nothing I wrote was a criticism of 1776. Your lengthy defense is appreciated but seems like an elegant way of skirting some of what I said and asked.

Scores are about resonance. You like what you like, as you should, and don't like what you don't like, as you should, but the REASON you like it is that it resonates for you. Resonance evolves. To deny that is to deny the world in which we live. (IMO)

I'm going to take a swipe at one piece of low hanging fruit: "True rhyming is a necessity in the theater." Is it? How does my buddy Mr. Carnelia defend that? Who do you? Surely you both realize there are very successful works of musical theatre art that do not worship at the church of perfect rhymes. Maybe you don't care for them. How could that be? Resonance! I suspect that if I put on a recording of an Urdu musical, it would not resonate for you either. Interestingly, although I love things Sondheim, there are those who find it too precious, and who find that focusing on all those cleverly perfect rhymes (and of course we all know there are plenty of exceptions) distracts them from the storytelling. Shocking to you? How could that be? Resonance. That's rule #1. Rule #2? Tell the story or go home.

1776 is worthy of your defense, but you do a better job of that here than in your original lashing out. Critics are not always right, but how could they be? Why would we want them to be? I am a lot more concerned that we went decades without critics (or producers) for whom anything but the scores and narratives that resonated for (mostly older) white men was terra incognita. That some of them also missed the boat on 1776 was, in the end I think, no harm, no foul.

What do we agree on? "Taste is scores is diverse." I am glad you seem to have come around to celebrating that rather than throwing shade on what resonates for others.
