| Re your first paragraph, I think we are going around in circles. I get that you think perfect rhymes are essential whereas I think resonance is essential. I'll give you a Hamilton lyric that, I believe, typifies (without resolving) this disparity. "The ten-dollar founding father without a father/Got a lot farther by working a lot harder" [I could add the rest of the verse but this makes the point.] Lots wrong there in your bible, but incredibly meaningful and resonant in mine. No one gets lost because they can't follow. Re the Sondheim quote, he's wrong. He was wrong when he said it. He tends to lash out as if someone shut down the editing device in his brain. Insularity and navel gazing is not something to be championed, even in great lyricists. Re "which drew added attention to the fault," here I think you reveal much of what I have been saying. Most folks listening never missed a beat, never had their attention drawn to "the fault." You did though. Why? Because you are more focused on rhyme than the reason, I would respectfully suggest. I would discourage you from checking into an antique store. I encourage you to like what you like. At the same time, I encourage you to consider your biases, and that's not something a relic does. :-) |
