I'm a great lover of 1776; it was my first Broadway show, and the book is extraordinary. But I have problems with the score. I don't dislike those lyrics about the Adams children; it seems believable to me that Abigail would enumerate those medical troubles, and that John would momentarily allow himself to be flippant about them. I don't always demand a literal emotional display to prove the character "cares." It seems to me that people who care a great deal can occasionally be flippant, and that being demonstrative proves little.
I find the songs of 1776 work in the context of the play (just barely) but that the songs don't have the beauty or resonance of some other musical theatre scores by such as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Porter, Loesser and Sondheim. I have no wish to argue this; I have my opinion and others have theirs. I used to be a director, and I would be thrilled to direct a production of 1776, whatever my overall opinion of the musical score. |
