I'd also say a mistake is hiring people who don't understand musicals to WRITE the musical.

Craig Lucas and Nathan Tysen? Really?

Daniel Messe is the only one who's not a seasoned musical theatre writer, but actually I think his music for the show is quite nice.

Not for nothing, but Messé is indeed an experienced MT writer--like Tysen, he's an alumnus of NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, and he and Mindi Dickstein have written two full-length musicals and a bunch of shorter shows for TheatreworksUSA. (He's just better-known for Hem, though.)
