Like any other actor, Queen Latifah is great when she's well cast, but she does have her limitations, and there's nothing in her resume to indicate that she could play the kind of comedy required for the role of Adelaide in GUYS AND DOLLS.
A related issue is that the traditional way of playing that role -- as a sort of a ditzy chorine with a thick Noo Yawk accent -- is out of fashion today, so whoever is cast as Adelaide in a new movie version of GUYS AND DOLLS is going to have to come up with a plausible alternative. You know who I think did just that, based on her performance on the cast album? Norma Donaldson in the all-black Broadway GUYS AND DOLLS of the mid 1970s. |
