The title "One of Four" comes from the statistic that 1 out of every 4 women will be raped in college in the United States.
We are acutely aware that gender-based violence is a highly sensitive issue. Tabula Rasa Dance Theater has the deepest respect for survivors of emotional and physical abuse. Many of us, directly or indirectly, have been irreversibly harmed by abuse.* Through movement, we are sharing our outrage and our pain. We believe dance has transformative powers and the potential to inspire compassion and empathy.
In the piece, three female-identifying dancers and two gender- nonconforming dancers will partner with manikins representing their abusers. These life-size, cumbersome figures will symbolize how the trauma of emotional and physical abuse is a weight borne by victims forever.
At certain points, the manikins-hoisted overhead, thrown to the the floor, or entwined, swung, and dragged around dancers' bodies-become almost indistinguishable from the performers themselves. These dummy figures seem animated, at times fused with the dancers into a single, knotty, multi-limbed entity.
Shuddering movements and spasmodic contractions reflect the brutality of the survivors' experiences. The dancers sometimes appear to lose control over the dolls, or find that the articulated, inanimate figures are attacking them.
Occasionally, the large, heavy figures seem to crush the dancers with their weight, and immobilize them.
The performers show, with abstract, clear, dynamic movements, how the psychological and physical toll of assault is permanent. Whether or not the shadow-like manikins are inextricably entangled with the dancers, the burden they represent remains, leading to anxiety, denial, despair- and possibly, to hope and healing.
"One of Four" has been developed through the generous support of the Ford Foundation.
