| How does this relate to this thread, which is about Emmys for filmed stage shows? | |

| I wandered over here from a similar semantic argument on reddit, which is about whose rules or decorum determines how everyone is meant to respond. This thread, at this point in its branch, isn't per se about Emmys for filmed stage shows. The first post was about Hamilton nominations, the next was about American Utopia (a filmed stage show) and Oslo (a film adapted from a stage show), and then Wayman offered a post about other stage artists getting nominations. So Wayman seems on topic both in the narrow sense of the thread - two filmed stage shows and one film from a play - but also in the larger sense that this is an Emmy's thread, and why not post everything related to theater and the Emmys in one thread? | |

| Let me make clear that I am not advocating any sort of banning or censoring of posts, but there had been any post in this thread that was not about productions of stage shows on film. To me, a post about a smattering of actors who work on stage (sometimes) nominated for non-theatrical work (there are of course a ton more not mentioned in Wayman's list) is, in the described context, an irrelevant tangent. Why not post everything in the same thread? Because, to me, that creates a muddle. If you like it, fine. I prefer not having posts entitled "re: 12 Emmy nominations for HAMILTON" polluted with posts about nominations for non-stage work regardless of whether the actor sometimes works on stage or not. ymmv | |

| Well, that would be easier in SF (where the All-Star Game will end a few minutes after 8) than in NYC. :-) Please note that my comment did not urge that the post not be made, just that it was posted in a thread it didn't belong in. :-) |

| MGirl posts a fact. Shock Theatre comes in and sprays Liza fairy dust over everything. Singapore Fling comes on and insults another poster. Then Ryhog wraps it up by criticizing how the posts are not on topic. Everyone pretty much being who they are. Good night all. |

| Interesting article by Pete Hammond, one of the awards gurus, who notes that the Hamilton actors are getting nominated for the exact same performance six of them got Tony nominations for. Since this is essentially a filmed version of the stage production, these performances weren't really adapted or modified for the screen. So should they be eligible for a screen award? He notes, "What’s to keep every big show on Broadway from doing the same thing going forward — not adapting their shows for TV but simply shooting it while everyone’s still in costume?" |

| I have said this before but it is the prerogative of folks who give awards to set their own rules. Yes, we can call their rules stupid and we can call their nominations stupid but the truth is that awards are stupid. Beyond that controversial notion, what is the reasoned basis for saying an actor should not get an Emmy when they were eligible for a Tony if an actor can get a Tony even though they were eligible for a Drama Desk, Outer Critics, etc etc etc award? | |

| True. And ''Sweeney Todd'' competed in the categories of Variety or Music Program. ''Hamilton'' is competing as Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). However, Angela Lansbury and George Hearn competed in ''Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program.'' (And Hearn won.) If that category still existed, that's where Miranda and Odom probably best belonged. But the Emmys discontinued that category after 2008. So Miranda & Co. were eligible in the acting categories of Limited or Anthology Series, even though ''Hamilton'' isn't a Limited Series, etc. |

| ...showering "Sweeney Todd" with attention and giving producers more reason to give us "Sunday in the Park with George", "Into the Woods", and "Passion"--which in turn inspired generations of theater makers and performers. I think awards like these exist most usefully to encourage more excellence and more innovation in programming and to draw attention to things that should continue or we should have more of--so, please, nominate the hell out of "Hamilton", "...Utopia", and any other filmed show that has been done with care. |
