On phone ONLY tickets
Posted by: Al10chim 11:15 am EDT 07/16/21

I for one hate not having a paper ticket in hand. Things I've tried to purchase tickets for recently say" On smart-phone only; you will not be able to print your tickets, If one prints their own tickets no one else has to touch them and they can be scared whilst holding them oneself. Telecharge; Ticketmaster and certain venues are using Corvid as an excuse to save themselves money. Not everyone owns a smart-phone let alone knows how to put and display tickets on one. Especial old farts like me. Anyone else upset by this?

Yes, I too am very upset by this, and it's actually stopping me from seeing things I might otherwise be interested in. There is no good reason for this, and it's yet another nail in the coffin of the concept of Customer Service!

"There is no good reason for this"

Actually, there are many good reasons. I'm sorry this is upsetting for you, but the fact that we live in a digital world is not a concept that has just arrived. If anything, the theatre is behind. If this really truly is a crisis for you, I suspect that if you approach the box office and explain your situation, an accommodation will be made. P.S. You also can't use a token in the subway. Soon you won't be able to use a metrocard.

When I wrote ‘no good reason,” I meant that I don’t see how this can stop the spread of disease since scanning the barcode on a paper ticket or a print at home ticket involves as little direct contact as scanning it on a phone and there is less from a technology point of view that can go wrong. Not truly a crisis for me, but an inconvenience. I find your response a little hostile. As for the subway I can’t use Omni even if I wanted to because the senior half fare option exists only on metro card.
I also wonder if even fewer people will turn off their phones once they’re inside the theater since they’ll have to have it on for entry.

... I can see both sides. I like paper tickets, but if I'm honest, only to stick in my playbill. I've certainly been careful to handle less paper from other people in the last year, and I can understand why it would be desirable to have theatre staff do the same. I don't think that any of the "problems" cited—no smart phone, dead batteries, etc.—are anything that can't be resolved at the box office upon arriving at the theatre. (And I doubt paper tickets are going to entirely disappear anyway. After all, TKTS will still be there.)

Frankly, I'm more disappointed at the prospect of programs going all digital... and we started down that path before Covid even hit.

I share your frustration with the increasing "smart phone only" things going on all over the place and not just for ticket sales. Agree that even if you have a smart phone, they are not the easiest tech to use.

I'm in complete agreement with you in being opposed to phone-only tickets, for multiple reasons. In addition to the assorted tech problems that could crop up at the worst possible time in trying to find the tickets, and the fact that there is a segment of the population that either doesn't have a smart phone or is unable to use it properly (just consider all those people who don't seem to know how to turn off their phones in the theater, as shown by the Michael Sheen cell phone thread above), other possible disasters include dead batteries (especially likely on Broadway, where busy tourists may not have a chance or may not remember to charge their phones) and lost or stolen phones. Give me a paper ticket any day, whether mailed or printed at home, but please no phone-only tickets!

(just consider all those people who don't seem to know how to turn off their phones in the theater, as shown by the Michael Sheen cell phone thread above)

I admire your optimism that it's lack of knowledge that's keeping them from doing so.

You're right, of course, I didn't want to go off on this tangent, but indeed the majority of offenders are just obnoxious, badly-behaved theatergoers who do know how to turn off their cell phones. However, I have had enough exposure in theaters to usually, though not always, elderly cell phone incompetency to have seen firsthand how some percentage of the population are genuinely unable to figure out the most elementary functions of their cell phones.
