I don’t think tap dancing matches the character or any part of his character arc.

A few years ago (ok, more than a few years ago I saw an excellent production of TMM at Asolo Rep in Sarasota, Fl, choreographed by Jeff Calhoune (Newsies) and starring Noah Racey as an even more dancing Harold Hill than we are used to. At some point, those that recognize the show as one of the more perfectly put together musicals are going to have to accept that everyone playing the title role can not attempt to replicate Robert Preston and yet the musical still works.

not to mention that he is a horrible tap dancer. seriously, it looks like he's avoiding stepping into dog doo on the streets of NYC.

You are not alone.

Jackman has charisma to spare.

Aside from that, I'm kind of out of the loop on it.

... Maybe Harold Hill passed through Kansas City, same place Will Parker had picked up some hoofing six years earlier in 1906...

In setting up his appearance with a clip from Jackman's new movie REMINISCENCE, why did they have to choose a violent clip of a fight scene with no dialogue? How does that show off his talent in any way? Was it meant to stress that Hugh can play a macho tough guy, in order to counteract the fact that some people perceive musical theater as unmanly (or worse words than that)?

Hugh Jackman taps into his inner Harold Hill

On ''Colbert,'' Jackman is shown rehearsing some tap dancing. Is there usually a tap number in ''The Music Man''?

In part 2 of his ''Colbert'' appearance, Jackman also reveals he wants to brush up his Shakespeare. His dream role is King Lear.

Presumably we'll see some new fantastic choreography with Warren Carlyle in charge of the dance numbers. Hugh and Sutton tap dancing - why not? Hugh posted the entire rehearsal tap dance number ( see link) - and someone suggested that it seems like he was tap dancing to the beat of the Rock Island Overture. He even hooted the train whistle at the end. Could be a change intended for the revival?

Hugh was trained in dramatic theatre ( including classical theatre) at WAAPA in Australia and performed the role of Romeo in one production. He used to say that he was keen on Henry V...but I guess with him aging up, he is now turning to LEAR. He has also always acknowledged Trevor Nunn as his mentor and has said that he would someday want to do some classical theatre with him.

It’s quite feasible and yes, admirable that choreographer Warren Carlyle wants to infuse something new and different into this revival. Why not a tap dance inserted where no one has seen it before in any production of MUSIC MAN? It could be, as Jo pointed out, related to “Rock Island” or perhaps “Sadder But Wiser Girl,” “Marian the Librarian,” or the more likely “Gary, Indiana” or especially “Shipoopi.” Why revive a show—even a classic— unless new elements are introduced to offer a fresh outlook or speak to a different generation?

I think some soft shoe or tap dancing would be perfectly appropriate for "Gary, Indiana," and perhaps also Harold Hill might do a little bit of tap in the library in "Marian the Librarian" to further ruffle Marian's feathers. But offhand, I can't think of an appropriate place in the show for Marian to tap.

In the movie (and thus presumably the original production), there is a moment in the fast and energetic crowd-dance break of "Shipoopi" where a male ensemble member (or Tommy?) yells over to Harold Hill: "Hey Professor – show us some new steps!" The original dance music then struck up a new honky-tonk piano ragtime tune as Harold joined the number and launched a new section, holding each girl partner close (ultimately Marian) and performing variations of the Castle Walk and Irene-and-Vernon-Castle-popularized ragtime steps; the rest of the townspeople picked up the steps, ever susceptible to the leadership of Hill.

On YouTube I have seen a dance break, tap, in "The Sadder but Wiser Girl".

If they tap dance through Rock Island (not the Overture, which is a separate thing that happens first), I will definitely not be going. What an awful idea. There are plenty of opportunities for dance in The Music Man - but please not there.

He was primarily at the Colbert show promoting his new movie REMINISCENCE. The film is a romantic sci-fi thriller written and directed by WESTWORLD'S Lisa Joy Nolan ( wife of Jonathan Nolan who co-writes scripts with brother Chris Nolan). In one media interview, Lisa said that the storyline is partly inspired by the Greek mythology story of Orpheus and Eurydice as he tried to search for his wife in Hades's underworld. I had wondered if there is some similarity to the story inspiration for the current show HADESTOWN? In the film, the lead character is obsessed with finding a woman he fell in love with when she availed of his tech-based memory-recall service. That brings him to the underworld of a near-future Miami affected by climate change to look for her. It looks noir!

Quite a departure from The Music Man.
