I expected the usual auditory onslaught, but I heard helicopters only two or three times during the performance, and they seemed to be higher up in the sky and not directly overhead. So maybe the campaign is starting to work.

Still, I don't know why helicopters can't be banned over that part of the park except in cases of dire emergency. Air space is highly regulated for all sorts of reasons. Why not that area?

Aren't at least some of the helicopters working in fact in an emergency situation (transport to medical facilities)? Or are all of these going over the park private or tour helicopters?

They don't seem like emergency helicopter to me...

because they don't seem to be in a hurry to be getting anywhere! I wouldn't want to be a patient in one of those things.

Also, in Manhattan, we don't have too many emergency helicopters on a regular basis because ambulances make transport quick enough.

NYPD's helicopters seem to get pretty constant use, emergencies or not. They thunder back and forth over my house in Brooklyn several times a day, at least. (Their base is at Floyd Bennett Field, so I'm on their way to pretty much anywhere.)

What I don't understand is what are the helicopters doing over Central Park? Are they tourist businesses that tour the area or are they commuter routes. I always assumed that the commuter routes for helicopters were fixed along the two rivers.

I'm glad fans of the park and Shakespeare are raising a fuss. From the way the FAA is responding to Rep. Nadler, it feels like the FAA is still in Trumpland.

And indeed all helicopters is that they have to be a 1000 feet higher than the tallest object within 2000 feet. Bare in mind though that Central Park is only 2640 feet wide so they have to be careful to be 1000ft higher than the buildings that run it’s edges unless they are in the very center. That’s still pretty low though!!

I was all ready to agree that surely they are banned over Manhattan but that is only open door trips.

In the 1981 TEMPEST at the Delacorte starring Raul Julia, directed by Lee Breuer and Ruth Maleczech, the play began with a helicopter circling close overhead the stage then disappearing from sight in a tailspin as if crashing, followed by Prospero (Julia) and entourage stumbling onstage as if tossed from the copter.
