Galling that he refers to the piece as "My Cinderella" in his press release. As if no one else collaborated.

ALW is very good at making galling statements of all types.

Sounds like a case of "Fine, then I'm taking my ball and going home!"

I think he expects this announcement to strike fear in the hearts of the Establishment. The only reaction can be a fearful apology from Downing Street (or the Palace) and complete capitulation to his version of reality. I think he believes this bold gambit will put an end to all the nonsense, and he can open the show and everything will be like 2019 again.

ALW is saying out loud what a LOT of folks are thinking and where a great backlash is brewing....

He is absolutely correct that the new rules actually make it virtually impossible for anyone to run a business. Besides his show (and others like HAIRSPRAY and PRINCE OF EGYPT), we have seen the temporary and immediate closures of everything from restaurants to train lines. This all down to the new system of checking-in with an app so you can be notified if someone at that establishment has tested positive when you were there. Getting 'pinged' means you have to self-isolate for 10 days, even if you have a negative test and even if you have been fully vaccinated. Thanks to this new 'pingdemic' as it is commonly known, everything has been thrown into chaos. You cannot really make plans to do anything whether it is booking a table at your local cafe, buying a ticket to a show or planning a vacation.

The contrast with how the Bridge Theatre handled the same situation is certainly striking

Despite thorough precautions in place at The Bridge, were made aware of a suspected positive case of COVID-19 within the team working on Bach & Sons. To ensure the safety of our audiences and colleagues, we are cancelling the performances from 12 July to 17 July inclusive.

As usual customer are entitled to an exchange, account credit or full refund. We appreciate your patience as we work through responses. We are deeply sorry that your performance cannot go ahead, but we hope you'll be able to join us another time.

I see what you did there - though I don't know if that was intentional lol.

It’s always been like that. ALW’s Starlight Express, ALW’s Phantom. So weird. Why don’t the lyricists get credit?

Lyricists often don't get credit when shows are mentioned, unless they're part of an established team. But the "my" in this case feels even worse - ignoring not just the other writers but the whole company that is now losing work. A simple "OUR Cinderella" would have been so easy to say.

Even wearing his producer hat. I mean, I can't think of the last time I've heard a producer say something like "I regret that we must close my production of [show]" - more commonly they'll say "our." It's just common courtesy.
