I'm a big Lloyd Webber fan-- I'll start with that.

I got the music on the day it was released digitally, and had a quick listen to 3-4 songs, and found them to be alternately charming, then unmelodic, then jarringly 'synthetic', then lush... I wasn't paying it to much attention, as I was busy with my kids, but I thought it was a bit of a hodge-podge.

However, on the second listen (and subsequent ones, as I am now on my 10th or 11th listen) I find it a really clever melange of styles, but each one is applied to a particular character or attitude...I am rather enjoying it a lot, and I find David Zippel's lyrics almost entirely hilarious, touching, goofy, and fun-- I really enjoy his wit.

I can't speak to the book or the sound of the music IN the theatre, but the pre-recorded concept album has me very pleased. I am surprised the book is 'a mess', considering Fennell's credits...

As for my initial reactions-- that happens to me quite often with new shows. I find many of them difficult to 'get into' on one listen... my brain has to be come familiar with the recitative, with the motifs and how they appear... the first time I ever heard "Evita", it sounded like jarringly random notes to my 17-year-old ear, but within days I was enraptured. I had to same reaction to "The Light in the Piazza" and "Sunday In The Park With George". I'm certainly NOT saying "Cinderella" is in that league... but just the same, I find it takes a few listens and one really warms up to it.

My daughters won't stop singing it, either... and not just the 'big tunes', but the recitative and more conversational melodies...they are 8 and 5.

Anyway... As an ALW fan my liking it is not shocking, but I thought I'd throw my 0.02 in.

:)

I look forward to hearing about the first time one of your daughters say, 'you're a knob!' lol

There have been a few changes to the score since it was recorded. Some of the big numbers and orchestral pieces were recorded at Abbey Road studios, so some of it does sound lush, but there are 7 people in the band at the theatre.

The well/bird bit has been cut, there is no longer a 'phallus' on the statue, Charming's only song about the 3 headed sea witch has been cut, which basically makes him a walk on part with a few lines. Unfortunately the Queen still sings about how well equipped her son is.......the Godmother role goes no where, Cinderella was meant to be 'modern take' but she spends what little time she is on stage in Act 2 trying to get her man. Some of it was amusing, but that was when when someone called someone a bitch, or similar basic humour. The Stepmother is very funny onstage, but i'm not sure that comes across on the recording. For some reason, the role of Cinderella has an 'alternate' for certain performances. It's hardly Evita!

Lawrence Connor has no experience of shaping a new show from scratch and it needs someone who can say, no, this isnt working and needs to be changed. I wonder if he can do that with ALW. Emerald Fennel is a great writer, but this is her first book for a stage show and It needs some shaping. If only it had some of the dark wit of Killing Eve!

Only 7 people in the band? Ridiculous. This is what keeps me from going to see most musicals these days.

Speaking as a musical director and musician, I wish you could say that louder and more often. Especially so that producers/directors of regional companies could hear it loud and clear. Thank you. :-)
