Funny how we were just discussing here that if anyone ever deserved the honor it was Joni Mitchell. Her response today:

"I’m grateful to the Kennedy Center for bestowing this honor on my work and I look forward to being a part of this prestigious celebration of the arts. I wish my mother and father were alive to see this. It’s a long way from Saskatoon." - Joni

...or whatever it's called for the Kennedy Center Honors? Would be so interesting to know if she's allowed to advocate for/nominate potential honorees and whether Liza has ever made the shortlist. That said, I certainly can't argue with any of their choices. All worthy honorees and, to varying degrees, major contributors to popular culture.

Diaz is best-known as an opera star, but he also recorded ''South Pacific'' for Yap Records in 1996 with Paige O'Hara, Sean McDermott and Pat Suzuki.

And his daughter Natascia Diaz is an award-winning actress whose Broadway credits include ''Man of La Mancha,'' ''The Capeman'' and ''Carousel.''

Gus Diaz also was the star, alongside Leontyne Price, at the grand opening of the then-new Metropolitan Opera in "Antony and Cleopatra". Congrats!

And he was also featured prominently, along with Price and Rosalind Elias, as a talking head in the wonderful documentary THE OPERA HOUSE, about the closing of the old Met and the construction and opening of the new one.

By "The honorees also include" I guess this ABC journalist isn't a big Joni fan - it explains how he doesn't know she expanded beyond the "folk singer" limitation decades ago!

Pretty exciting lineup, however.

Liza, hang in there!!
