I saw one of his Broadway appearances, I don't remember which. I remember being taken with the Yiddish musicality of his delivery, cantorial in a profane way. He was fascinating. I felt that the older audience was listening deeply to Mason as if what he represented was going away. Some of it, good riddance, the insularity of its racism and homophobia as well as the insularity of the Borcht Belt culture itself which at its beginnings welcomed Jews to the kind of resort that denied them access in Christian America. But the musicality of the patter, that was beautiful and it was sad to see people saying goodbye to it.

Saw him on Broadway and was appalled at the homophobic jokes he was using in his act as late as the 1990s! Then he became a big Trump lover who tried to justify his racism as well. As Moms Mabley used to say (which was appropriated by Craig Russell in his act, impersonating Bette Davis), "I was always taught never to say anything about the dead unless it’s good. He’s dead. Good!”

Comedians and satirists are supposed to push the boundaries of what's tasteful and nice. Could Lenny Bruce even exist in today's politically correct cancel culture? What actual harm did Jackie Mason do to gays and people of color, for the hate that's being leveled against him now?

Could Lenny Bruce even exist in today's politically correct cancel culture?

Lenny Bruce existed when there was an actual 'cancel culture'—he was repeatedly arrested and finally convicted for obscenity. Could he exist in today's made-up 'cancel culture'? Hell, yes. Today the phrase is a conservative buzzword in a made-up culture war. People voting with their feet (through protests and boycotts) and wallets (by petitioning advertisers) is a far, far cry from bringing in the police. And while conservatives claim to hate 'cancel culture' as an example of woke 'political correctness'—as you just did—they are usually the first to embrace it. Let's not forget Republicans frothing at the mouth over Julius Caesar in the Park, and their celebration when Delta Air Lines and Bank of America acquiesced to their demands to withdrew funding.

"What actual harm did Jackie Mason do to gays and people of color, for the hate that's being leveled against him now?"

Just one example:

He told jokes making fun of "faygelahs" [his word, not mine, and I have no idea how to spell it] for being who they were. A gay kid's parents went to see his show and came home and told those jokes to the kid's aunts and uncles at the Sunday barbecue. Everyone laughed uproariously. The gay kid killed himself.

Is that enough actual harm for you?

If so, consider donating at the link.

Sorry for the kid. However I sat front row with my partner and my parents who were in their late 70's I'm thinking. Mason remarked to me and my partner about being gay, I don't think we're that obvious, but Joan Rivers did the same lol, anyways I don't recall the exact comment, it was in jest, and then after intermission he came out and immediately started off on how he meant no harm to us. Don Rickles, Joan Rivers, Jackie Mason, Lenny Bruce and many others are a lost generation.

He sold out shows and made people laugh. Something not everyone can do.

The obits I've seen for Mason have been pretty celebratory, mostly ignoring his controversies with racial (and homophobic) comments.

They did recall how playing Broadway revived this Borscht Belt comic's career and earned him a special Tony Award in 1987.

On Tony night, he joked: ''I feel like Ronald Reagan tonight. He was an actor all his life, knew nothing about politics and became president of the United States. I’m an ex-rabbi who knew nothing about acting and I’m getting a Tony Award.”

Mason, who did about a half-dozen shows on the Great White Way, once claimed: ''Now I am the biggest hit to ever do Broadway.''

My husband and I cringed occasionally at some of his patter, but overall he made us laugh loudly. We saw two of his Broadway shows and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. He was the last of the Yiddish-accented comedians to capture the fascination of the general public. May he rest in peace.

I had dinner with him one night. He was a horrible man: prejudiced, homophobic, etc. He was so horrible that my husband and I walked out.

Jackie Mason has a daughter, Sheba Mason who was conceived from a brief relationship with playwright Ginger Reiter. Jackie Mason never acknowledged Sheba and repeatedly rebuffed any attempt by her to have any kind of relationship. Sheba meanwhile has become a stand-up comedian herself in an attempt, I think, to get her absent father's attention and approval. Sheba has played Caroline's and any number of venues with various acts - some dedicated to the father from whom she has been estranged nearly all her life.

That alone sours me on Jackie Mason - comedians are often dark, difficult people in real life but Sheba seems desperate to connect with him, to be acknowledged. Here is her tweet on her father's death:
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of my father, the legend Jackie Mason. I would see him sitting in front of the Applejack Diner, unable to chat with him, but what’s worse is to not see him there. His legacy lives on in “The Jackie Mason Musical” which was written from pure love."

If I were Sheba, I would call myself Sheba Reiter and kiss his sorry (now dead) *ss goodbye.
