The obits I've seen for Mason have been pretty celebratory, mostly ignoring his controversies with racial (and homophobic) comments.

They did recall how playing Broadway revived this Borscht Belt comic's career and earned him a special Tony Award in 1987.

On Tony night, he joked: ''I feel like Ronald Reagan tonight. He was an actor all his life, knew nothing about politics and became president of the United States. I’m an ex-rabbi who knew nothing about acting and I’m getting a Tony Award.”

Mason, who did about a half-dozen shows on the Great White Way, once claimed: ''Now I am the biggest hit to ever do Broadway.''

My husband and I cringed occasionally at some of his patter, but overall he made us laugh loudly. We saw two of his Broadway shows and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. He was the last of the Yiddish-accented comedians to capture the fascination of the general public. May he rest in peace.

I had dinner with him one night. He was a horrible man: prejudiced, homophobic, etc. He was so horrible that my husband and I walked out.

Jackie Mason has a daughter, Sheba Mason who was conceived from a brief relationship with playwright Ginger Reiter. Jackie Mason never acknowledged Sheba and repeatedly rebuffed any attempt by her to have any kind of relationship. Sheba meanwhile has become a stand-up comedian herself in an attempt, I think, to get her absent father's attention and approval. Sheba has played Caroline's and any number of venues with various acts - some dedicated to the father from whom she has been estranged nearly all her life.

That alone sours me on Jackie Mason - comedians are often dark, difficult people in real life but Sheba seems desperate to connect with him, to be acknowledged. Here is her tweet on her father's death:
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of my father, the legend Jackie Mason. I would see him sitting in front of the Applejack Diner, unable to chat with him, but what’s worse is to not see him there. His legacy lives on in “The Jackie Mason Musical” which was written from pure love."

If I were Sheba, I would call myself Sheba Reiter and kiss his sorry (now dead) *ss goodbye.
