The obits I've seen for Mason have been pretty celebratory, mostly ignoring his controversies with racial (and homophobic) comments.
They did recall how playing Broadway revived this Borscht Belt comic's career and earned him a special Tony Award in 1987.
On Tony night, he joked: ''I feel like Ronald Reagan tonight. He was an actor all his life, knew nothing about politics and became president of the United States. I’m an ex-rabbi who knew nothing about acting and I’m getting a Tony Award.”
Mason, who did about a half-dozen shows on the Great White Way, once claimed: ''Now I am the biggest hit to ever do Broadway.'' |
