Could Lenny Bruce even exist in today's politically correct cancel culture?
Lenny Bruce existed when there was an actual 'cancel culture'—he was repeatedly arrested and finally convicted for obscenity. Could he exist in today's made-up 'cancel culture'? Hell, yes. Today the phrase is a conservative buzzword in a made-up culture war. People voting with their feet (through protests and boycotts) and wallets (by petitioning advertisers) is a far, far cry from bringing in the police. And while conservatives claim to hate 'cancel culture' as an example of woke 'political correctness'—as you just did—they are usually the first to embrace it. Let's not forget Republicans frothing at the mouth over Julius Caesar in the Park, and their celebration when Delta Air Lines and Bank of America acquiesced to their demands to withdrew funding. |
