Years ago, I found a sepia-colored album of ''Boulevard!,'' starring Gloria Swanson, in ''the long-awaited musical adaptation of 'Sunset Boulevard.'''' But it was a mystery. I don't recall it having any liner notes, and other than Swanson's name, there was no cast list or any indication of who wrote it.
So I'm glad to know that there'll finally be a movie about this musical curiosity, done by Jeffrey Schwarz, the award-winning documentarian of ''I Am Divine,'' ''Tab Hunter Confidential,'' etc. The film's synopsis sounds fascinating: ''Dickson Hughes and Richard Stapley, two young songwriters and romantic partners, find themselves caught in movie star Gloria Swanson’s web when she hires them to write a musical version of “Sunset Boulevard.” Also complicating matters was the fact that Gloria set her sights on handsome Richard Stapley, resulting in a classic love triangle.''
YouTube has a cut from the album, ''Talk, Talk, Talk.'' ... Meantime, I can't wait to see the documentary; I'm ready for its closeup. |
