He was not the star, and it was nothing anyone could have planned, but Marc Blum played the same role on the 2000 and 2012 revivals of The Best Man. He replaced Michael McKean in the later revival after he’d been injured in an accident.

Mary Louise Parker and David Morse are still scheduled to recreate their off-Broadway roles in How I Learned To Drive, aren’t they? Jason Robards took around as many years to revisit Hickey in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway after starring in an off-Broadway revival. He also played James Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night off Broadway in the mid-70s and on Broadway around 13 years later. I’m not sure if the off-Broadway to Broadway route is quite the same thing but it was fascinating to see Robards’s work through the years (his Iceman Cometh was filmed for television by Sidney Lumet).
