Shirley Booth as Dolly?

HAZEL was in production from 1961-1966 so it's unlikely she could have done it at the beginning of the run, and from 1967-1969 it was the Pearl Bailey/Cab Calloway cast.

Do you know whether Ethel Merman was announced as the "last" Dolly in the Broadway run? Had Merrick decided to close the show and banked on the Merm being a splashy way to end the historic run? Or was the decision to close made once she had taken over? (She played March-December 1970.)

Either way, Shirley Booth would have been brilliant, I'm sure, and as idiosyncratic and memorable as Channing or Bailey.

(Trying to think of a Vandergelder for her and of course Paul Ford came to mind. Funny he never did the musical either. I know he doesn't really sing in The Music Man, and Vandergelder is a bot more demanding, but hardly difficult.)
