Thanks for the report.
Non-traditional casting aside (and personally I’d LOVE to see a Fanny of color), just because someone can SING the hell out of the Jule Styne songs doesn’t mean they necessarily have Fanny in them. If that were all there was to it, they would’ve done the revival with Idina Menzel, as was discussed seriously among producers and the R&H company about 15 or 16 years ago when she was coming off her Tony win for Wicked, and before it was determined that her specific acting chops weren’t ideal for the role. The same can be said for Warren – while she certainly is capable of being funny (see “Shuffle Along”), the comedy of Fanny Brice is a very particular style that based on what I’ve seen of her in several various highly talented performances - including getting more laughs out of the Tina Turner role than I would’ve thought possible - I strongly suspect isn’t an ideal match for that part. But I could be wrong.
