Jane Withers, prolific film, TV, and occasional stage actress has passed away at age 95

Jane Withers was a hugely successful child film actress in the 30's through the late 40's. During the 40's ('43 through '46 mostly) she performed in a number of musical comedies on stages throughout the Midwest and East coast, mostly forgettable shows and stuff I never heard of.

Her film career revived in '56 with a supporting role in the blockbuster hit Giant. Afterward she had a long career on TV with film and stage work in regional theatre from time to time. She reportedly was offered roles in productions of Hello, Dolly!; Mame; No, No, Nanette; and the like but turned them down. According to an article in the New York Times, Withers, Shirley Temple, and George Murphy did a benefit production in some Broadway theater for one night in Feb., 1971 in a musical comedy titled Sure, Sure, Shirley, although IBDB doesn't list it.

Withers' most enduring role is probably that of Josephine the Plumber in the Comet Cleanser commercials from 1963 through 1974.
