I'm glad you and so many loved Kinky Boots and that it pleased and hopefully broadened the minds of thousands of audience members for 5 years (or whatever it was) and employed so many talented people.
But if it weren't a Best Musical winner and if a friend wasn't in the cast, I'd have left at intermission. The book is packed full of lazy cliche and and recycled jokes and character colors, and the score is often fun but like... lazy also, especially the lyrics. And I honestly felt the work done on a creative ideas level of the direction, and choreography especially, and the design, were lazy too. It was also late in Billy Porter's run and it felt like he was really phoning it in.
I don't know what to say. Just was not the show for me.
But I haven't revisited it since I saw it then. |
