pessimism go away
Posted by: tocop 10:30 am EDT 08/15/21

I can't wait for broadway to come back, not to mention off-broadway, regional... But something keeps telling me that this just isn't going to work. The masks, the vaccination checks, all make sense--but---I don't know--it just doesn't feel to me like it's going to overcome those ongoing CoVid variants. I want to be encouraged, but I'm just not feeling it yet. I'm someone who would purchase tickets for almost everything...This time around, I haven't yet purchased a single one. Any thoughts?

... but for sure, not if it's going to be the usual cheek by jowl affair in the midst of the delta variant! (Though it's still some months away.)

I was at a major theatre opening here, last night. It was outdoors, and the theatre was full. There weren’t any particular precautions in place. I wasn’t wearing a mask in my seat. I felt fine about that. At intermission, however, I stayed in my seat, and people around me started discussing the show, in one case, loudly and emphatically and facing in my direction. I suddenly didn’t feel so safe and put on my mask. I took it off again for Act 2. I don’t see any of my behavior as being particularly irrational, but I don’t know how safe it was, really. I’m not trying to justify my behavior or advocate for similar behavior by theatre audiences, but it’s interesting to me to reflect, the morning after, on it and consider what felt safe and what didn’t.

You cannot be too careful....you were smart to put on that mask. THREE people I know, all fully vaccinated in March, are now in SC & Ohio hospitals with severe CoVid. One has been hospitalized for 12 days now.

I was feeling ready, but I had a breakthrough infection even though I am fully vaccinated. That really changes your perspective. I've been ill and homebound for about 20 days now so it is no small thing. Yes, I understand it would be far worse if I were not vaccinated.

To be clear, I was in what I would now consider a high risk environment. A bar with unmasked patrons. Three out of the four guys (all vaxed) in our party that night ended up testing positive and had some level of symptoms. Obviously, I learned a lessen. I would not take that risk again.

I certainly think a masked audience where vaccines are checked, brings the risk level down. However, I now feel crowd averse based on my experience. It will be awhile before that feeling goes away. I was planning on seeing the Rent tour here in Chicago, but it's playing a huge theater and I just couldn't do it now. There are two smaller shows I want to see as well, but again, I'm just not there yet.

I imagine that If I hadn't had the experience I had, I would be comfortable going to the theater. It's all still a moving target, so I imagine peoples comfort levels will shift for better or worse as things develop.

PlazaBoy - I'm adding my sincere prayers and support for you - I hope you are recovering well and that you will be ok. I also thank you for being willing to share this with us, because it reminds us that the virus is still very much with us and that we still need to be careful. We may all have different degrees of "careful," but careful is important.

Thank you, and get well.

Thank you for your kind thoughts and support.

It's a slow road (I'm entering my fourth week), but I am optimistic I will make a full recovery.

I hope things continue to go well, PlazaBoy. I had two friends, fellow writers, who had breakthrough infections, and are now much better. May your experience be like theirs!

At the end of July. There were some indoor events also, but most were vaccinated like Provincetown. I’m surprised your case was bad. Might you share which vaccine you got—there hasn’t been much in the news comparing Johnson with Pfizer/moderna.

Berkeley rep cancelled their first show starting next month due to the increase in covid.

Pfizer for me. Not sure what my two friends had.

Another interesting data point to me is that while I am in my late 50s, my two friends are in their 30s. All of us got sick. In fact, of the three of us, the one who had to go to an emergency room was in his 30s. He's doing better now, but still recovering.

All of us were caught by surprise at the intensity of our cases. Two of us don't even drink alcohol so there's some irony that we caught it in a bar. Or at least it appears we did. I imagine there is no way to really know if one or more of us had it prior to that night.

Was your friend vaccinated as well (who had to go to the ER?) I'm so sorry for all of you - I hope you feel better soon.

Yes, all of us were vaccinated.

Thank you. I'm getting better slowly, but surely.

I’m in my late 50s and had Pfizer. I only attended the outdoor street fair on Sunday without a mask but it wasn’t too crowded where I hung out. I only went to a bar once in March and not since. Only the movies during low attendance times and of course food shopping and restaurants a few times. I’m not helping the economy.

As an aside….

I will have no problem going to vaccinated and masked performances. As an aside, It does suddenly feel like suddenly everywhere is being more careful round the city again today I had a long walk round the park and down Fifth Avenue where the shops are requiring masks inside again. I forgot mine so the Apple Store kindly gave me one, then Uniqlo was masked as was Levi’s in Times Square etc The bars I go to in Hells Kitchen are vaccinated only, although we can still spread Delta but i is think there is less chance of it.

We have some tickets for next month, but I'm extremely worried about it. If someone near me takes off their mask, I can't see myself staying.

Two issues here: Safety and cost. If the precautions that are being put into place appear to be adequate and you feel sufficiently safe going to the theater, then go if you want to. Pay attention to the unhyped data and scientific analyses as these are made available, and don’t be ruled by the “what-ifs” and “maybes” and fear-mongering as the sole determining factors in deciding whether or not you venture out — either now or down the road. With so much financial investment at stake, everyone charged with making sure individual productions and venues are safe is contributing mightily to making things as safe as possible for all involved. All things considered, I’m going to the theater — vaccinated and masked.
As for cost, the best bet would be to purchase tickets on the day of or close to the day of performance.

Irony was dead. Donald Trump was never going to be nominated by the Republicans. Donald Trump was never going to be elected President.

How the hell do any of us know anything?

I trust your "feeling" about the future for Broadway as much as I trust anti-vaxxers' feelings about the vaccines.

I'll do my part on both fronts. Double-vaxxed. Fortunate to be getting regularly tested. Happily attending movies and plays with mask firmly in place.
