Farewell: Don't feel like talkin' any more
Posted by: Billhaven 11:26 pm EDT 08/17/21

The 2 recent threads: concerning Alice Ripley and then Laura Osnes have convinced me that I no longer want to be a part of this online "community". The avalanche of snide, smug and condescending remarks, and gaseous posturing by this group of anonymous people has finally got to me. I've enjoyed sharing theatrical pleasures: stories and anecdotes or maybe some insights but I don't need to share vitriol, invective and self righteous outrage. It's lost its appeal. It's not how how I want to live my life. So, have at me if you want. I'll be reading a novel by some pool or having al conversation with folks I like and care about. One shout out to AlanScott who has given his knowledge and expertise with never a trace of snark. I admire his tact and restraint. I don't have that so I will take my leave. Here's to theatre. I've spent my entire life in it, among kind and talented people. That's who I intend to spend the rest of my life with.

But just read the positive threads - it is very easy to guess the gist of a post and you don't have to open the ones that are bound to irritate you (and me). I think highly of this board, but you can't stop some people from reveling in others' misery or human catastrophies but you can avoid those threads.

Absolutely! You can definitely make educated guesses and steer clear!

I've enjoyed reading your brilliant & sensitive posts over the years, Bill. We all love theater so very much.
Personally, I think the frustration with Osnes comes from the fact that her position directly threatens the very lives of those who make Broadway come alive in the first place.
I guess I understand getting angry over that. The fact is, the unvaccinated directly threaten the lives of everyone on the planet. That isn't hyperbole, it's science.
It seems to me that if we love this incredible art form, if we love life, we should be willing to stand up for it.
These are things worth fighting for.
Does it mean we have to act like hyenas? Obviously, no.
I am devastated that over 600K Americans are dead, including many theater artists.
Now, it's lovely to talk about our collective passion, theater. That's why we're all here. But right now, there really is no theater and the only way to change that, collectively, positively, communally, is to get vaccinated.
I pray we can all get back to speaking about Broadway ASAP. But that understandably might have to be put on the back burner until we can insure that people don't die.
And may I say, if you choose not to return to the board it will surely be our loss. Peace.

I get where you're coming from, but I am hoping that those posts/threads you write of were aberrations.

AlanScott never posts enough for me. And others like Kieran and Wayman,

and I've enjoyed your posts too.

I echo your sentiments completely! "Gaseous posturing" is the perfect description of what I have been reading here of late. Sorry to see you leave but I am thinking I may not be far behind :).

Dear Billhaven, I agree with you and understand. I obviously was upset with the way Laura Osnes was treated with such venom by many of the posters (but thankfully not all) a well as Alice Ripley. It was one thing to criticize anyone for not getting vaccinated during this frightening pandemic. But it just wasn't necessary to hope or project that her career will end. But I do count on this site for news. So I will stay. Happy trails Billhaven.

You will be missed, but I understand what would motivate you to leave.

I permanently deleted Facebook for some of the same reasons and many more.

I still enjoy this chat board, but not as much as back in the day when posting felt like having a conversation. The sense of one-upmanship seems to have really hit it's stride in the past decade. Here and elsewhere.

I must say, my faith was restored to see how kind people were to me about my recent post about having covid. I was concerned that even that could result in some arch comments, but fortunately that did not happen.

I tend to feel that most people that really want to leave a group just leave without any fanfare or notice. Those that have to post a long and bitter "farewell" are often looking to be talked out of it.

So I'll say it. Billhaven, I wish you would stay. However, if you're going to go, you have your reasons, and sometimes it IS healthy to step away, at least for a while. Perhaps you'll come back when you feel you can?

If they have been part of an online community for twenty years or so for example. It’s drawing a line under something, a funeral for a past habit, an explanation for anyone that would miss him. I think a lot of the angry behavior here including occasionally my own reflects the stressful times we live in. Losing people, stress of what will happen next, dealing with people that won’t get vaccinated that you know in real life for what you see as stupid reasons, working from home etc The board has changed of course, I think in the past people were delighted to be able to talk to each other and make comments and now we are all too used to that and take it for granted. So there is an irony to me that when I lived in London I would meet new people from this board in real life all the time and now I live in New York I have never met anyone.

You could have skipped them. I read probably a third of the posts. There’s a lot i just don’t care about and clearly there are people that don’t read mine (no one commented on extinction of fireflies that I posted yesterday).

I don’t think that’s what it means concerning reading…..

I don’t think it means that people don’t read your posts if they don’t respond. I will read posts then squirrel away the information for future reference. Details of a new play or a production coming for example. I don’t think anyone comments on everything they read, probably only a very small proportion I would think.
