Unexpected Song

I've watched the individual clips of the ladies from Sondheim's 80th a million times over the years. But tonight I saw the whole 30 minutes for the first time (with David Hyde Pierce!) and was enamoured again in a new way. My only issue...still...

Why does Bernadette Peters sing the same old "Not a Day Goes By"? She sounds incredible, and it's a lovely performance of the song, but we've seen her do it. So many times. It's essentially a signature of her's at this point, yes?

What other Sondheim songs "should" she be doing? What would surprise you, delightfully, to hear her do from his canon? I'll start.

I would have loved a "The Miller's Son."

…at the Hollywood Bowl, Bernadette did “Being Alive” in the first half, and “Children Will Listen” as the big second half number, followed only by Barbara Streisand leading everyone in “Happy Birthday,” and a student chorus with “Our Time,” joined by the all-stars. Audra sang “Not a Day Goes By” mashed up with “What Can You Lose?”

Laura, who will never forget the two fellows seated in front of her who clutched each other when Babs came out, and one gasped, “Ohmigod, if she sings, I can die happy!” :)

How about Bernadette doing Fredrik's part of "You Must Meet My Wife" opposite another lady? Would it work?

I would love to see her as Mrs. Lovett (in a full scale revival with the original sets.)

All these scaled down versions and concerts have made it unlikely but I'd love to see the big spectacle people saw originally.
